The Fiddler of Dooney Competition originated in Sligo Town in the 60’s was organised by Paddy McGuire, Sean Forde, Paddy McSharry and others. The competition was held in Sligo Town until 1970, from 1970 – 1972 it was held in Riverstown. It was in 1970 in Riverstown that the renowned piper, Leo Rowsome, died whilst adjudicating the competition. The Joe O’Dowd Branch of CCÉ later revived this competition and it continued steadily until 1996. The current chapter in this competitions’ story started in 2006 with the current Sligo Town Branch of CCÉ.
